Checklist and
provisional atlas of the Collembola of The
Netherlands
The checklist below include all
species with published records in the literature or species
that are in the Collembola collections of the Natural
History Museum at Amsterdam and Leiden, or my own
collection. The checklist is preliminary because the
material in the museum collections was not checked. Most of
the material was collected before 1975 and changes in the
taxonomic status of species arising from recent taxonomic
revisions and decisions are not taken into account.
Re-examination of the Collembola collections is needed and
discovery of misidentifications leading to changes in the
checklist will be reported. Based on information on the
occurrence of Collembola in surrounding countries many new
species are to be expected for the Fauna of the Netherlands.
Especially, coastal and inland sand dunes, heather fields
and the littoral zone have been poorly studied. These
habitats have the special attention of the Collembola Survey
Scheme during the next years.
Taxonomy
The species names of Poduromorpha
follow the modern descriptions in the publications of
Babenko et al (1994) Collembola of Russia and adjacent
countries: Family Hypogastruridae, Fjellberg (1998) The
Collembola of Fennoscandia and Danmark. Part 1:
Poduromorpha, Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica, Vol. 35,
Brill, Leiden, and Jordana et al. (1997) Collembola
Poduromorpha. Fauna Iberica, Vol. 8. For the family
Isotomidae the species names refer to the descriptions in
the new book by Potapov (2001) Isotomidae, Synopsis on
Palaearctic Collembola, Vol. 3. Abh. Naturkundesmus.
Görlitz 73(2): 1-603. The species names of Symphypleona
refer to the descriptions in the book by Bretfeld (1999)
Symplypleona, Synopsis on Palaearctic Collembola, Vol. 2.
Abh. Naturkundesmus. Görlitz 71(1): 1-318.
Maps
The mapping of the distribution of
Collembola in the Netherlands has recently started. Only a
few maps are available at the moment. Regular updates of the
current maps will be made and new distribution maps will be
added to the list. The first maps are produced by a computer
program developed by the European Invertebrate Survey,
division The Netherlands. In the future the DMAP computer
program will be used to plot the distribution data. Steve
Hopkin uses the DMAP computer program for mapping the
distribution of Collembola in Britain and Ireland. When the
same computer program is used it will be comparatively easy
to construct distribution maps of Collembola for lager parts
of Europe, by merging existing databases.
Distribution
status
The status of species of Collembola is
based on the number of records in the 10 km by 10 km
Ordnance Survey Grid square of the Netherlands (hectads).
For sake of comparison I have adopted the presence
classification scheme by Steve Hopkin (see below). The
Collembola Survey Scheme is an ongoing project and regularly
updates of the status of species will be provided.
RARE: present in < 5
hectads
SCARCE: present in 6-10 hectads
MODERATELY COMMON: present in 11-25 hectads
COMMON: present in 26-50 hectads
VERY COMMON: present in > 50 hectads
INTRODUCED: not found outside glasshouses
etc.
COMMON and VERY COMMON species are
shown in BOLD UPPER CASE text. RARE, SCARCE,
and MODERATELY COMMON species are shown in bold lower
case text. NO CONFIRMED RECORDS species are shown in
unemphasised lower case. For these species no
definite records supported by specimens are available.
Eventually, they may be removed from the
checklist.
