Checklist and provisional atlas of the Diplopoda of The Netherlands

The checklist below include all species with published records in the literature or species that are in the Diplopoda collections of the Natural History Museum at Amsterdam and Leiden, or my own collection. Most of the material was collected after 1970, but changes in the taxonomic status of species arising from recent taxonomic revisions and decisions are taken into account. Discovery of misidentifications leading to changes in the checklist will be reported. Based on information on the occurrence of Diplopoda in surrounding countries a few new species are to be expected for the Fauna of the Netherlands.

Taxonomy

The species names of Diplopoda follow the descriptions in the publications of Schubart 1943, Tausendfüßler oder Myriapoda I: Diplopoda. Jena, Verlag von Gustav Fisher, and Blower 1985, Synopses of the British Fauna (New Series), no 35, Brill & Backhuys, Leiden.

Maps

The mapping of the distribution of Diplopoda in the Netherlands has started in 1990. Maps are available for almost all species (Berg 1995, Preliminary atlas of the millipedes of the Netherlands. Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit: 1-56), and are currently updated. After updating, maps will be added to the list.

Distribution status

The status of species of Diplopoda is based on the number of records in the 10 km by 10 km Ordnance Survey Grid square of the Netherlands (hectads). For sake of comparison I have adopted the presence classification scheme by Steve Hopkin (see below). The Diplopoda Survey Scheme is an ongoing project and regularly updates of the status of species will be provided.

RARE: present in < 5 hectads
SCARCE: present in 6-10 hectads
MODERATELY COMMON: present in 11-25 hectads
COMMON: present in 26-50 hectads
VERY COMMON: present in > 50 hectads
INTRODUCED: not found outside glasshouses etc.

COMMON and VERY COMMON species are shown in BOLD UPPER CASE text. RARE, SCARCE, and MODERATELY COMMON species are shown in bold lower case text. NO CONFIRMED RECORDS species are shown in unemphasised lower case. For these species no definite records supported by specimens are available. Eventually, they may be removed from the checklist.
