GETTING THERE

Queen's College is located on the High Street in Oxford, England. There are excellent air, rail, and road connections for travel to Oxford. For Conference participants traveling by air, flights to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports provide a good connection to Oxford.

The X70 Citylink bus leaves Heathrow every 30 minutes and takes about one hour for travel to Oxford (the return fare is about £9). The connection to Gatwick is every 2 hours and the travel time is about 2 hours (the return fare is about £16). The X70 bus stops on the High Street right in front of Queen's College.

There is regular train service to Oxford. It is possible to either take a taxi from the rail station to the College or board the #52 bus which leaves the train station every 10 minutes to Queens College (approx. 30p). Oxford Bus should have all of the schedules.

There is no parking at Queen's College. We do not advise conferees to bring a car to Oxford. Everything is within easy walking distance and parking is difficult and not always secure. If, however, you do bring a car to Oxford please look for signs for municipal parking garages on the outskirts of the city and park in one of these. From there, either walk or take a taxi to Queen's.

THE CAMPUS

Queen's College was founded in 1341 and is one of the older colleges at Oxford University. It claims a special atmosphere of friendliness and lack of pretension. The informal nature of the College and the surroundings are in keeping with the nature of Gordon Conferences.

THE MEETING ROOMS AND POSTER AREAS

The meeting sessions will be held in the School of Geography located on Mansfield Road, approximately five minutes walk from Queen's College. The room will be set-up with chairs and writing tables in class room style. Coffee breaks will be held for the morning sessions at the school.

Poster sessions and social functions are held in the College. There are 27 free-standing, felt-covered Poster Boards, 3 feet wide by 5 feet in length, of which both sides can be used.. Velco tabs can be used and push pins are also supplied. The Cellar Bar is conveniently located downstairs from the poster area.

THE FACILITIES

Queen's has some 150 rooms available, about 100 in the College and 50 in the annex next door. All of these rooms are set up as single rooms. About 15-20 may be set up for double occupancy for Conference members who are accompanied by a guest. The rooms vary in size but are generally in the range of 100 - 200 sq. ft. In all cases the toilet and shower facilities are separate from the sleeping rooms. Arrivals at Queens before the Conference or accommodations after the meeting may be available on a space-available basis, depending on other bookings at the College.

In the Rear Quad there is a computer room available for our use. There is also a lounge for reading, watching English TV, piano playing, parties, or just for a quiet place to talk. Downstairs washing machine, dryers and ironing boards are available.
