A ‘Supra’ network of excellence is proposed to serve Systems Biology for Health. It will coordinate the networks of excellence, integrated projects and other large European research programs that relate to the Systems Biology aspects of Advanced Genomics for Health and other European priority areas.

The function of macromolecules in living organisms depends to a great extent on their dynamic interactions. System approaches from all fields of science and of various types will be needed to profit maximally from Genomics. The necessary field is too wide to be organized in a single focused network of excellence. To unleash the full scientific potential, it is proposed that the ESBIGH supranetwork connects Networks of Excellence and Integrated Programs that themselves concentrate on one aspect of Systems Biology for Genomics and Health. ESBIGH will establish maximum synergy between these various Networks of Excellence and Integrated Programs.

This approach is unique for the world and may well help to put Europe at the front of medically-oriented, applied genomics.
