WIAS

Wageningen Institute of Animal Sciences (WIAS) was founded as a graduate school of Wageningen University in 1993. WIAS was officially accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences on 19 june 1995. Scientists of a number of departments of WU have united their forces in order to contribute to the sustainability of livestock and fish production through fundamental and strategic research, and through PhD education and training. For further information on activities of WIAS see www.zod.wag-ur.nl/wias

The genetics of resistance to infectious diseases

INTRODUCTION

For many infectious agents the host’s susceptibility to infection and clinical disease is determined by genetic factors of both the pathogen and the host. This may have important implications for the animal breeder who tries to optimize the production level in the presence of potentially harmful pathogens, and for the evolutionary biologist who tries to understand the causes and consequences of coevolution of the host and its pathogens. This seminar draws together scientists working in the fields of animal breeding, epidemiology, and evolution. The challenge is to integrate the insights of the various disciplines to obtain a fuller understanding of the genetic basis of resistance to infectious disease.
