Abstract: Mass, energy, time and entropy balances for individual organisms typically help to understand their abundance and activety. Since the chemical composition of biomass is not constant, such balances are not simple and advanced stoichiometric contraints apply for the production of biomass that depend on the metabolic organisation of organisms. The Dynamic Energy Budget theory offers a framework within which these balances and constraints can be addressed in an efficient way. This theory for metabolic organisation is based on mechanistically inspired assumptions and captures the variation in the composition of biomass in the dynamics of reserve(s) and structure.
